GRINDROD Limited confirmed shortly after the Department of Transport’s media briefing that it had been awarded third-party access to Transnet’s rail network.
Grindrod was the first successful applicant to issue a statement in this regard. According to Transport Minister, Barbara Creecy, 11 applicants had met the necessary requirements and will proceed to the next stage of negotiations and contracting.
The company said the achievement marks a significant milestone in South Africa’s rail reform journey, creating opportunities for private sector participation to contribute positively to South Africa’s freight logistics system. Rail enables the movement of freight, connecting South Africa’s mines, farms, and industries to terminals and global markets cost effectively and efficiently.
“We are honoured for the recognition to play a role in South Africa’s rail reform. This milestone supports our commitment to driving cost-effective and efficient integrated logistics solutions for our customers’ cargo flows.” said Xolani Mbambo, CEO of Grindrod Limited.
According to the company’s website, various business units within the Group offer intermodal services, including Grindrod Logistics, a joint venture with Maersk; Grindrod’s operations in Mozambique and United Container Depots.
It further says that Grindrod Rail is known for ensuring a seamless rail logistics solution for its freight customers. “We contribute to their enhanced results through coordinating logistics, managing railway operations and providing cost efficient rolling stock leasing solutions,” according to the Grindrod Limited website.
