Hillcrest, formerly a sleepy village, experienced a development boom in the late 1990s and early 2000s and is now part of the eThekwini Municipality Outer West. Hillcrest has become a popular suburb to live in with a range of residential options available, from small flats to some of the most exclusive real estate in the country. Hillcrest has become a popular residential suburb for young families due to the excellent schools in the area, favourable climate, accessability to private healthcare, varied amenities and residential properties available. Most notably, Hillcrest has become a promising location for a variety of businesses.

Hillcrest is home to large shopping centres and smaller retail outlets alike.  Some of the major shopping centres include: Hillcrest Corner, , The Colony, Christians Village, Richdens Centre, Hillcrest Centre, Oxford Villgae (formerly Heritage Market) and the very popular Lillies Quarter, to name a few.

Hillcrest also offers a wide range of office space for both small and large businesses.
