Hillcrest, formerly a sleepy village, experienced a development boom in the late 1990s and early 2000s and is now part of the eThekwini Municipality Outer West. Hillcrest is home to large shopping centres and smaller retail outlets alike.  Some of the major shopping centres include: Hillcrest Corner, , The Colony, Christians Village, Richdens Centre, Hillcrest Centre, Oxford Villgae (formerly Heritage Market) and the very popular Lillies Quarter, to name a few.
